If you’re reading this post, you’re probably interested in things to do in Chalong, Phuket (that’s in Thailand).

Good news, you’re going to Phuket. Though, most people go to Patong, because it’s the main party area of the whole island. The main beach of Patong is not nice. At all. It’s cleaner than Pattaya, of course (in case you’re thinking, where to go, to Pattaya or to Phuket, you can check this post out).

Unfortunately, the water in Chalong is quite dirty too (because a huge yacht club is just around the corner) and it’s strongly advised not to swim there. Then why to go to Chalong, after all?

Well, maybe you want to have a really relaxing vacation. Quiet evenings with the amazing tropical atmosphere. While Patong really feels crowded at night, Chalong is almost empty.

Especially, if you’re staying at Ao Chalong Villa & Spa hotel. It’s an amazing hotel for a very affordable price (especially for Phuket standards) with nice swimming pool and pretty amazing breakfast with lots of fresh fruits in the morning.

The hotel is quite isolated from the world: in order to get to Chalong Yacht club, where the most restaurants are, you need to walk to the main road for like 5-6 minutes, then 5 minutes more along the main road and then 5-6 minutes more to the sea following another street.

The walk is quite scenic, especially when it’s dark: you pass some empty fields, see the stars in the sky and the palm trees swinging in the wind.

Once you get to Chalong Yacht club, you can find plenty of quiet restaurants there. The prices are actually much lower than in Patong: you can find a great steak for just 400 baht. In some very local places near the main road, prices are even lower: we had a portion of noodles, sun-dried meat and a huge beer for around 190 baht. Or cheap fruits!

We were in Chalong in November and exactly in those days there was the Phuket International Sportfishing Tournament, a major event for all the Fishing fans. (We weren’t precisely the biggest fishing fans, but since there was nothing to do in Chalong in the evening anyway, we went there). This year’s tournament will take place in November.
It was actually fun: all the pubs and restaurants were crowded and all the people were discussing …. fishes, of course! Who caught the biggest one and so on.

Also, if you feel bored at night in Chalong, you can take a Tuk-Tuk to Patong to party there. It’s not so cheap but not very expensive either. Just another option of the things to do in Chalong.

It’s perfectly possible to get to the main attractions from Chalong: you can either hire a motorbike or just buy a tour in your hotel. We went to ride the elephants and see the show on one day (it was just around 600-700 banner per person including the hotel pick up) and to Koh Phi Phi island on the other day. The pier is very close to Chalong Bay. I think that the trip to Koh Phi Phi needs a separate post (coming soon).
