When you’re on the road all the time, it can be tempting to just grab and go. But when you reach a certain age, you’ve paid your dues when it comes to ramen noodles, and you know you deserve some treats (and some fuel for all those long travel days).

One of the best ways to experience a culture or a city is to sample either the local cuisine or some of the top restaurants (or both). But if you’re new to a place, it can be difficult to find out what they are. Let’s sort that out, shall we?

Hit The Hottest Restaurants

Some people genuinely travel just to experience some of the finest restaurants that the world has to offer. Each year, the world’s top 50 restaurants are published, with some travelers making it their mission to taste the treats from as many of them as they can.

Even when you’re not looking exclusively for places with Michelin stars, there are plenty of incredible gems to be found in just about every corner of the world. TripAdvisor is essentially the traveler’s bible when it comes to finding out which restaurants are worth heading to (and which just really are not). You can filter out the recommended places depending on what you’re looking for to save you wasting already limited time.

Of course these days, you don’t even need to set foot outside of your hotel or vacation apartment to eat the very same restaurants which are being recommended. Takeaways aren’t limited to greasy little hole in the walls these days, with companies like Deliveroo bringing high-end dining options right to you. From American carb overload in London through to the next big Italian thing in Dubai, you don’t have to overexert or miss a day best spent sightseeing to visit a restaurant instead.

Speak To The Locals

Local people can give you an incredible insight into the city’s best food – before things even hit the review sites. If something’s just opened up or is going to be the next big thing, the chances are they’ve heard of it.

Cosy and delicious -

In some cultures, it may even be customary to be invited over for dinner to sample the local and authentic cuisine for yourself. If an invitation like this presents itself, you really should accept it. This is the single greatest way to immerse yourself into a culture and to really sample the food as it should be.

Have a Walk Around

If all else fails and you want to disconnect from technology and ignore the apps, blogs and everything else – simply walk around the city.

This is how people used to do it back in the day, and if you have some time spare, you can really dedicate yourself to it. Avoid tourist traps and enjoy yourself. Sometimes the best places are the ones you stumble on having never really expected to find them.

Eating overseas doesn’t need to be an afterthought, it can be a big part of the experience. You’re not a budget backpacker, so you definitely don’t need to eat like it.
