Macau In One Day: The Best Things To See and Do

The best cities in the world for casino tourism

Las Vegas, Nevada

‌Of course, a list of the top five cities with a great casino scene starts with Las Vegas. Often referred to as “Sin City,” Las Vegas was the original casino town. However, when founded in 1905, it was considered a small town until the 1960s, when tycoons such as Howard Hughes started building hotel and casino properties around the area. Within a few short years, Las Vegas was transformed into the Entertainment Capital of the World and now hosts many fantastic casinos, including The Venetian and MGM Grand. People travel from all over the world to visit Las Vegas just to enjoy the casino scenery to play blackjack, roulette, poker and even classic slot machines which inspired the creation of online versions of the game with unique themes like the Gonzo’s Quest Megaways slot UK. On the other hand, some visit Vegas just for a weekend to party, for extended stays to enjoy the nearby scenery, or even to make it their permanent home, embracing the adventure of starting a new life in a big city.

Macau, China

Macau has quickly established itself as one of the world’s premier gambling destinations, and it’s easy to see how! Since the city came back under Chinese sovereignty in 1999, it has retained special administrative rights from the rest of mainland China, allowing gambling to remain legal there. Chinese investors have poured billions of dollars into creating some of the most stunning hotel and casino properties there, overtaking Las Vegas in terms of revenue in 2007. Some of the highlights include Wynn Macau and the City of Dreams, but there are hundreds of different places to go to when visiting Macau. Gambling tourism is the city’s most significant source of revenue, accounting for over 50% of their economy, and it encourages players from all over the world to come and play.

Monte Carlo, Monaco

‌If you’re looking for glitz and glamour from your casino experience, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Monte Carlo, Monaco. The principality of Monaco is often known as the playground of the rich and famous, with Ferraris lining the road as far as the eye can see. Nowhere is that better exemplified than Monte Carlo. It has built its reputation upon iconic casinos such as The Casino de Monte Carlo and the Casino Cafe de Paris, built in the mid 19th century. The success of Monte Carlo is entirely built around bringing in foreigners, as the citizens of Monaco are barred from entering the casino unless they’re an employee. Featured in famous films such as GoldenEye, Ocean’s Twelve, and Never Say Never Again, the casinos of Monte Carlo are the height of luxury, and should be on any fan’s bucket list.

Paris, France

‌Known as the City of Love or the City of Lights, Paris might not be the top choice for casino tourism. In fact, most people wouldn’t associate Paris with gambling, but it has a thriving casino culture. As online gambling is heavily restricted in France, players’ only option is to play at live casinos if they want to enjoy casino games. Luckily, there is a wide range of fantastic casinos in Paris, each with its stunning design and interior. Some of the highlights include the Paris Club Elysees, which is thought to be the first local gaming club to open in France. They have over 23,000 sq/ft of gaming, dozens of tables, and a delicious restaurant. There’s also the Club Circus Casino, a favourite amongst poker players. It offers 19 poker tables and the largest selection of available games in Paris.

Singapore

‌Last but not least is Marina Bay in Singapore. Singapore is one of many Asian cities that have made significant strides in the casino industry in the past decade. However, Marina Bay Area in Singapore stands above them, partly thanks to the iconic Marina Bay Sands casino. Sitting on the waterfront, this magnificent casino consists of three towers, all linked by a cruise-style building that lies across the three towers. These hotel and casino are arguably some of the best in the world, with over 2500 rooms available, 20 different dining options, and the world’s largest casino atrium, with over 1600 slot machines and 500 gaming tables. However, that’s still not enough for the owners of the Marina Bay Sands. A fourth tower is scheduled to be added to the complex by 2026, with 100 hotel rooms and a 15,000-seater concert venue.
