Are you feeling down after a trip? Don’t have motivation do to anything? Hmm, seems like you’re facing post travel depression. But how to get over it?
Traveling is a wonderful activity full of new experiences, emotions and a huge distraction from everyday life. I’m sure many of you had this feeling of emptiness & lack of motivation do to whatever just after returning from some fabulous 2-week trip (or even a wonderful month abroad, somewhere in Thailand).
This feeling is especially strong if you’re in a long-distance relationship and traveling is the only way to meet your other half. In this case, this feeling of emptiness just doubles. Or triples. Or quadruples.
You feel like: oh I don’t want to do this. I’ll do it later. I’ll do everything later, now I just want to lay down and stare at the screen of my mobile phone. Unpacking the luggage? Come on, you say, you’re gonna be home for ages, you’ll find time for that. Eventually.
Actually, unpacking your luggage is probably the hardest activity when you have the post travel depression. You feel like you’re ruining your vacation memories and closing the chapter of traveling. Like: yep, it is officially over. But you don’t want it to be over! Not now, when you need to be back when you desperately want it.
It happened to me many times. In the worst situations, the luggage was there for a month, but usually, it was fewer thanks to my parents, which were making me free the space the suitcase was occupying in the living room. But even in this situation, I was usually managing to keep that luggage staying there, in my room, for 2-5 days.
How do you overcome post travel depression?
Well, the main problem is that you actually don’t really want to overcome post travel depression. You’re totally fine with it existing and ruining your mood. Because come on, it’s depression. It works like that. But your brain might still realize that you need to do something.
What usually helped me to let my trip go & go on and keep moving, was keeping myself busy. Meeting friends, doing online shopping, going to cinema : those innocent and yet very cheering activities can improve your mood for a while. And once it’s up for some time, you need to get very busy, start researching for some courses or just simply create a problem which needs to be solved. When you’re busy, you don’t have time for sadness. And eventually, you start realizing that THIS is your world, real life and routine and you get to like it. Again. Until the next trip 🙂
Also, you can start planning a new trip. Even though, it might be in a year (or in an indefinite amount of time, doesn’t really matter), still, you’ll get excited, you’ll be thinking about it and counting days until this new trip, which is a perfect distraction from post-travel depression.
